After a few weeks, it was time to go to the workshop. That's right people, our episode took multiple weeks to film. After a long two weeks of waiting, we had time to think of how we were going to transform our pieces. And if you watched the episode, you know that our categories were ombre, rewrapped project and convertible design. To our surprise the workshop was here in Connecticut at a super secret location, if you want to call Stanford a secret. Marco and I love to make things fun and exciting, so true to our style, we showed up at the workshop with props. If you’ve seen the episode you’ll see a lot of dancing in the workshop and references to the tropics. We danced in a conga line, made mojitos (not ) and Jenn really surprised me with her moves! Thank God we brought the props!
When we got to the workshop all of our furniture was set up in sections. We brought some of our own tools to help with our transformations and we were told to set up our work area. The production crew then explained how the day was going to go. We weren’t allowed to start working on out projects until Lara arrived which took longer than we had expected! More Hollywood magic people! You don't actually have all day to work on your projects, In reality, you have a few hours.
We spent our morning prepping our space and taping our interviews. Are you ready for what we had in mind for our projects???
When I saw the chairs I wanted to reupholster the whole chair and make them into cute fabric accent chairs but then Marco and I researched the chairs and found the chairs were Equipales Barrel Chairs from the 1920’s. These chairs were a sign of luxury and high status used by the jet set in resorts along the West Coast. Extremely rare to be found on the East Coast.
We decided not the change the integrity of the chairs and went on to make cushions and pillows! Who doesn’t love cushions and pillows, easy peasy!
For the bar, this one I was really proud of, if you saw the condition we bought it in the door was not attached. We didn’t want to put the door back on, how boring would that be? So we put handles on both sides of the door and created a functional removable tray. It sat on a mechanism that pulled in and out. I’m a little disappointed they didn’t show that in our episode because it was something I was really proud of. And for the nightstands...well to be honest let me just tell you we ran out of time.
Lara has arrived! Time to film. One hour of filming with Lara turns into 1 and a half minutes of witty banter (go figure). Then as we prepare to get ready to work on the projects, we were called to have lunch. Right after that, we started filming again and Lara started asking us about or ideas for our pieces. This time we had a chance to be more interactive with Lara. She was so personable, outgoing and really funny! She gave good advice on our pieces. Now it’s time to get down and dirty! (but the time was dwindling away quickly to get the work done.)
Fun Facts about our workshop day: Marco destroyed the bar to make it pretty again. I started sewing and cutting the fabric and we focused on the pieces that we thought would give us the win. Like I said, with the nightstands, we ran out of time so we did as much as we could with the time that was left.
So everyone was working and the camera crews were filming. I hear the producers say great shot, as I am sewing! I was thinking this was my moment, my time to shine! They were filming me and taking my pictures of me sewing. I was so excited! Then I took my cushion out of my sewing machine and it all fell apart. In my excitement I had forgotten to put thread in the machine (we all have those moments don’t we?) If you watch our episode really closely you can see me sewing with no thread ( oops) Don’t worry, once I added my thread, the cushions and pillows came out great!
We had so much fun! Everyone was so nice, we were received really well. We loved working with Jenn and Karen, It was like a match from Heaven. We got along so well, that after 9 hours of filming, we managed to stay an extra 45 minutes talking to them in the parking lot after everyone else had left.
