After our workshop adventure, we were ready to begin selling (ok so we had to wait a few days but we were anxious to get going). We woke up early in the morning to head over to the Long Island City Flea Market to begin selling our pieces. We arrived two hours early ready and eager. Since we were so early, we decided to go sightseeing. We took photos of the Long Island Pepsi Sign, walked along the boardwalk, and got coffee. During our walks we found a hidden treasure on the side of the road, which I was tempted to take home with me. It was this beautiful ornate mirror that would have been great for staging the nightstands.
By the time we got back to the Flea Market, it was time to get mic’d up. We had to review the rules for the selling day with the producer and staff. We went over their recommendations for successful selling. Once we got the rules and regulations out of the way it was time to get camera ready (and no, there was no makeup artist on set)
It was an overcast day which made us a bit nervous. You never know how the weather will affect Flea Market shoppers. It was forecasted to be heavy rains and possible thunderstorms for New England, but luck was on our side. It was a soft rain early in the morning and stayed overcast until 11 am. Then the sun began to peak through the dense clouds and it was good weather after that.
We entered our designated filming area, where our pieces were wrapped in blue cellophane and waiting for us to stage. Before we even started unpacking we had someone interested in one of the pieces because they saw it posted on Flea Market Flip’s Instagram. If you have seen the show, you know that we have to share a space with our competition, which was no problem because we became fast friends. Now comes the somewhat hard part of the day, selling our pieces in a short period of time.
It wasn’t a crowded day when it was time to start selling. Only a few curious people straggling by. If you looked in our direction or even made a comment, we tried to get your attention. Using our big similes and charming personalities, we attempted to sell our pieces. We called over so many people, that the producers had to tell us to stop because they couldn’t keep up with all the release forms. Our attitude was, we are selling ALL of our beautiful pieces today. We even had a few vendors from around the Flea Market interested in our pieces. (But interest isn’t going to make us win, selling is)
We sold the first piece, our light-up bar, to a couple who had just moved from France. They fell in love with the piece as soon as they saw it. The Frenchman wanted to make sure his wine collection would fit in the bar. It was a perfect match, one piece down, two to go.
There was a lot of interest in the chairs being that they were very unique pieces. But they hadn’t sold yet. Meanwhile the girls had sold two pieces. We had no idea what kind of profit they were making because when they were negotiating, the Flea Market Flip crew would pull us away. It was truly anyone’s game.
The nightstands were the next pieces that were sold, (yay!!) And a half hour later, we were sold out!
Fun fact, the woman who had bought the chairs from us was originally interested in them at the beginning of the day. She came back at the end of the day to purchase them. She must have done her research and realized they were a steal! We couldn’t believe it! That’s it! We were sold out! Now all we had to do was wait for our selling time to be up. Just because we sold out, we couldn’t sit back and relax just yet, Jenn and Karen still had one more piece to sell. With minutes left to the end time, they sold their last piece and just like that, both teams had sold out!
We had to anxiously wait for the producers and staff to add up our totals to see who made the larger profit. We knew we bought low and sold high but we couldn’t be sure if the girls had done better.
Warning: Spoiler alert ahead! If you have not seen the episode, stop reading HERE.
Seriously, stop reading, (okay, you can’t say I didn’t warn you.)
Drumroll Please….. As we are standing in front of the camera with the girls to the right of Lara and us to the left, carefully listening to every word Lara is saying. She began talking about the headlines of the day, who sold first, who sold last, we just really wanted to know who won. Finally Lara states “The big winners are of this episode of Flea Market Flip are the Muy Caliente team of Marco and Gabriel” We were so excited, although it was a big secret to keep. (We couldn’t tell anyone until the episode aired which wasn’t until October, because well, Hollywood Magic)
And as they say, “The rest is History”.
Hi Guys! Alexa here, it’s been a while hasn’t it? Although my Flea Market Flip experience is more of a behind the scenes experience, I told you I had a role in it, even on the sell day. I mean someone had to take care of the dog. Anyway I always knew they would win. I believed it from the second I got the news they would be on the show. I remember their sell day very well. As an outsider sitting at home, the day was more than overcast. Although I never knew where the boys were going,(they are great secret keepers by the way) it poured. I mean it was a complete washout and all I remember thinking Oh No! Oh No! This can’t be happening! As the day went on the rain got worse. I'm not gonna lie, I was nervous. I knew that they had worked so hard to get there and I wanted everything to go right for them. Once they came back they couldn’t say a thing and that was TORTURE for me! I wanted to know if they won….I remember watching the episode as soon as it aired. I was so nervous I couldn't even watch the episode with my family…. I needed to focus. (Seriously) By the time the end of the episode came around I had the biggest smile on my face...I just knew they won … I couldn’t contain my excitement when they did. I was just so proud of all they were able to accomplish, plus I could say that my best friends were on HGTV (and that is seriously cool!) Thank you for following “our”...... FINE….Gabe and Marco’s Flea Market Flip journey! If you haven’t seen the episode, do yourself a favor and check it out! Seriously go watch! I’ll make it easy for you! Find the episode here. If you are in the area you could also stop in the store and hear from the stars themselves! We can’t wait to see you! Be sure to check back soon to see what other adventures come our way!
